Kaya FM 95.9, home of the Afropolitan, and Bassline Live have long been huge supporters of the Zimbabwean living musical legend, human rights activists and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Olivier Mtukudzi – and we are honoured to be hosting him in our monthly ‘Kaya Fm & Bassline Live Presents’ series, held at the Lyric, Gold Reef City every month.
Oliver, a long standing regular on Kaya FM airwaves, is one of the most globally recognised cultural icons from our continent since beginning his musical career back in the late 1970’s. With over 65 albums under his belt, Oliver also has a doctorate from two universities and is a recipient of some of the most prestigious human rights awards, including The International Council For Africana Womanism Award (ICAW), recognising his role in the upliftment of African women through his artistic work.
Oliver is also the head of an arts Academy called Pakare Paye Arts Centre that offers music and a diversity of art forms, platforming and building talent. Accompanying him on stage on the 31st will be musicians from the academy, including Fiona Gwena on Vocals and Hosho, Craig Chandamare on drums, Ashton Nyahora on guitar and vocals, Charles Njekesa on bass and Donald Kanyuchi on guitar and vocals.
With his signature husky voice, he has earned a devoted following across Africa and beyond, and his performances in the South African territory are a rare and special treat for his fans, with over a year having passed since he last performed in South Africa.
Also on board once again for this event is stylish urban outfitters Brentwood Clothing, who, as new affiliates of the venture, are standing behind the rich arts and culture scene in SA through this musical series. We are excited to grow this relationship with them.
Having toured around the world several times, Oliver is no stranger to delivering top notch performances and this show promises to bring us his distinctive Tuku Music style up close and personal with artists he has groomed and personally hand-picked for the show.
