Cape Town’s legendary Freshlyground and Soweto’s finest, The Soil, are coming together for a night of pure musical magic at the Lyric in the next ‘Kaya FM & Bassline Live Present’ instalment.
Kaya FM 95.9, home of the Afropolitan, is a long-time supporter of both acts since their early beginnings and Bassline Live is thrilled to have these two groups on stage together in the series that is one of JHB’s hottest nights out at the Lyric.
Having them share a line up and single launch, in this once-only event on the 6thOctober, is a two-in-one explosion for JHB music fans. Fans will be the first to hear them perform their collaboration single “Mna Nalamagenge” together as they launch it at this event.
Freshlyground lead singer Zolani Mahola was quoted as saying, “A collaboration between The Soil and Freshlyground is a dream come true for both teams. The title literally means “me and my gang” or “me and my crew” and it’s a study on the bond that is created when a close group of people endure hardships together and celebrate life together. We love The Soil and I’m sure people will agree they were the perfect fit for the tune!”
Freshlyground was formed in early 2002 and has since performed on Bassline’s stages many times. Made up of musicians from South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe, Freshlyground is fronted by the dynamic songstress Zolani Mahola. The band exudes a live performance energy that has been the bedrock of their success.
Having toured the world relentlessly with their 5 original releases and scooping up almost every possible award for excellence, President Barack Obama cited Freshlyground as an example of what South Africa has given the world.
Freshlyground released their sixth studio album, Can’t Stop, produced by Tore Johanssen (Cardigans, OK Go, Franz Ferdinand) in early 2018 and fans will get to hear tracks from this new offering alongside huge hits such as Doo Be Doo and I’d Like.
The Soil, one of Soweto’s most beloved singing groups – acapella in style with an enigmatic stage presence like none other The 3-piece has managed to create their distinctive self-termed ‘Kasi Soul’ from a blend of contemporary township styles and a mix of urban sounds such as beat-boxing. The group strives to fuse their voices and deliver melodic and harmonious messages that are aimed at uplifting and healing souls around the world – and indeed they have, having toured across the globe with their 3 original recordings. The Soil were the group that started the Bassline Live & Kayafm Series at the Lyric in February 2017, a sold out show that set the tone for this star studded music series.
Also on board once again for this event is stylish urban outfitters Brentwood Clothing, who are standing behind the rich arts and culture scene in SA through this musical series. We are excited to continue growing this relationship with them.
Both of these platinum selling groups are calendar highlights on their own, but together they form a formidable line up that cannot be missed. Make sure you book tickets now!
